Family Photographer Gloucestershire – Things to do with kids near Gloucester

30th March 2021

Easter holidays are fast approaching and I have been gathering some ideas on where to take the children and keep them busy around my little part of Gloucester and I thought I would share with you!

I live just off junction 12 of the M5 and just off the A38, so here are some little gems not too far away from there. I would love to hear from you if you end up visiting any and hearing your thoughts.

Wholly Gelato

A lovely family run farm that sells Gelato Ice cream, some cake treats, milkshakes and fresh milk. There is parking along the side on the road and opposite the entrance and they are open for takeaway. You will also get a chance to say hello to the cows too!

Saul Park

This is our favourite park. It’s perfect to tie in with a trip to Wholly Gelato or a walk by Saul Junction. It has a huge playing field, sheltered sand pit, mud kitchen, slides and my sons favourite – the zip line. Perfect for a picnic and a play.

Robinswood Hill Country Park

Great for a hill walk or just to park up and play in the play park. Above the playpark there are some interesting wooden sculptures and sheep for the children to enjoy and a cafe that’s just opened back up for takeaway drinks and cakes.

Haresfield Beacon

Lovely views and a great walk. There are a few different trails to try and you may see some bluebells.

Woodchester Mansion

A beautiful scenic walk with a few different routes through woods, a lake and mansion with a lovely cafe at the end. Quite a hilly one for little legs but smells gorgeous this time of year with all the garlic and bluebells.

Purton Ships Graveyard

Just off the A38 near Berkley, this little hidden gem is a great free walk down the canal to the river where you can see abandoned boats and enjoy a picnic. Take some wellies as it was very muddy when we went a few weeks ago!

Snakey Park

A lovely park in Eastington near Stonehouse. It has great play equipment, a zip line and some skate ramps. I have heard there is also a drinks and snack van their now too!

Leaf and Ground

This stunning place is near Durlsey. It has a farm shop, restaurant (which are currently doing takeaways on a Friday and weekends – online orders), a great play area, a pond and a woodland walk up the hill. A great place to spend a few hours.

Catch a smile

I have only just heard about this place but it is definitely going on my list. Helping people with disabilities, they run fishing groups but they also have a lovely café and over the Easter holidays they have a dinosaur event on. Check out their Facebook page.

A little further afield:

Rococo Gardens

We love Rococo Gardens and they are open for bookings now. There are beautiful and quirky outbuildings to explore, beautiful flowers (the tulips are just blooming when we went last weekend), a lovely woodland that smells of fresh garlic and then a great play are for the children. The café is also open for takeaway food and drinks. #

Barnwood Arboretum

A great place to explore with children especially little ones who don’t like to walk far or you need take a pram as there is a pathway that runs through the arboretum, there’s lots of places to play hide and seek and to climb the sculptures.

Highnam Woods and Park

We love this park. It has a huge playing field and some lovely play equipment including a castle and slide. It also has a great woodland walk and this time of year you will find the bluebells blooming.

Painswick Beacon

A lovely walk up to the beacon with lovely views over Gloucester. Take a picnic too but watch out for golf balls!

Selsley Common

A great walk across the common, perfect for flying kites and looking at the dinosaur sculptures that were created out of stones by a local family. My son loved adding his mark to the stones.

Food:

The Cake Hatch at Hetty’s Kitchen

Gorgeous Brownies and cakes!

Salt Bakehouse

Yummy bakes available to order to pick op on a Friday at the Stonehouse location. They also have vans located around Stroud, look at their Facebook page to find out where.

The Roastery

For lovely coffee and takeaway food in quedgeley

Joe’s Pizza

Yummy woodfired Pizza located in the car park of the Whitminster pub

#9 Fish and Chips

Honestly the best fish and chips I have ever had based in quedgeley

The Ionian

I have not been here yet but it’s definitely on my list. The food looks incredible. A farm shop down the A38 that is doing takeaway woodfired pizza and amazing greek food.

12th April onwards

Cattle Country

We love cattle country. There is so much to do and explore for little ones. They are taking online bookings now for after the 12th April.

WWT Slimbridge

Slimbridge are opening from the 12th April but cannot see yet that they are taking bookings. We hope they will soon as this was a regular spot for us and I can’t wait to go back.

Over Farm

Over farm are now taking bookings for their Easter trail and vintage funfair. This is going into our list.

I hope that was helpful and have a great Easter break!
